Default Half or quarter square triangles.

To make these I know of a few methods.
One line diagonally across sewn each side of line.
Sew all round 4 sides of square and 2 diagonal cuts.
Draw 2 diagonal lines and sort of half way up one jump to other side and finish then do same on the other.
Which are the best considering bias. I'm using layer cake which has been laying around so long I had forgotten I had it.
Want to do a quick half square triangle quilt with these squares.but I think will have 5inch not 10 inch squares.
Help.

Hi there!

Here's what we'd recommend:
-Cut 5 7/8" squares
-Put 2 right sides together and draw a line from corner to corner
-Stitch a quarter inch on each side of the line
-Cut on the line

I think that might be the same as your first method, but I wasn't entirely sure

Either that or you could look into Thangles

This is the same method I use for my HST but I cut 1" larger than finished size instead of 7/8" then I trim down. I've never used QST but I think the method you described first about sewing around the outside edges would work perfect. Jenny @ M*QC does hers this way.

Default Half Pieced Triangles

If you want to make half square pieced triangles, I would cut 5" squares, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other. Stitch quarter inch seam on each side of the line. You will end up with squares approximately 4.625"(4 5/8). Trim to 4.5" and that would give you a 4" finished pieced triangle with NO waste. Layer cakes are a bit on the expensive side so the old saying "waste Not want Not". Good luck !!
