I did hand quilt my last quilt (queen size) and my fingers bothered me somewhat. Just had to do it in stages and it took me a bit longer.

i would seek an earlier appointment with a different doctor. this one doesn't seem concerned enough about your pain.

also, x-rays are not always accurate. you may need another one. if your insurance company will pay for it, ask the doctor to order a new x-ray.

Your best bet is to go directly to an orthopedic surgeon who is a hand specialist. That is all they do, take care of hand problems and surgery is not always needed. You may have osteoarthritis or nerve issues due to your injury. Also, you may not need a primary care physician referral if you are on Medicare. One perk of Medicare is that you can pick your own specialist without having to get a referral from your primary.

I have had hand problems too and my orthopedic surgeon was recommended to me by an occupational therapist when I was undergoing hand therapy. Best recommendation I ever got.

Good luck and let all of us know how it works out for you.

This is my first post ever. I usually just lurk and take in all of your wisdom, but I have something that I never heard of before. Maybe it will help.

I have been struggling with osteoarthritis for years. My chiropractor had me mix a concoction of different size and texture - salt, flour, popcorn, lentils - whatever, in a bowl and play with it. It is a bit messy, but it did help get some feeling back in my fingers.

My quilting is still a mess. Everything that seems to come easily to most of you is so hard for me. But I still love it.

Good Luck

I have a similar problem as yours.Mine though is due to over-use from my job (I work in a shoe manufacturing job).I had a specailist tell me that the tendon sheath that runs to the finger has calcium build up in it. I ahd ultra sound treatments at P.T.and it helped alot. Need to do this again because this was a few years ago,but I would look into it

I am right handed so this is slowing down my sewing. Anyone have any ideas? I do have appt. with rheum. doc, but not till July.

I Agree . Dont wait any longer than you have to.In the meantime you could try some Thera-Gesic Cream (otc)
It helps with my knees when they act up. Best of luck.

It seems to me that even if you didn't break your finger the bruising of it has now caused arthritis in that and the surrounding fingers. I broke mine and I now have that problem in my 3 fingers next to the broken one. I hope it is not that because they do get very painful at times.

I have RA, have had it for 11 years now. Everyone waits a long time to get into a rheumy doc, your wait time is average. I would have started with my primary first though. He can start with some blood tests, there is one for RA but half the people with RA have a negative result. A rheumy will have to diagnosis you. Hold off on any chiro apt as you cannot go to them if you have RA (I don't actually remember the specific reason, just that you shouldn't). If you indeed have RA, don't get too upset, I've been on my med cocktail for 11 years now and am in great shape. If you didn't know me, you would never know I have RA.

Good Luck.

I agree with all the previous threads. Do not wait. The longer you wait the worse it might get. I was an occupational health nurse (plant nurse). We had people with hand problems, falls, etc.
Cathyvv said it best. You might not have broken anything, but there are ligaments and tendons on that side of the hand. You could have torn something. An orthopedic hand specialist can be of help to you and then check in with your RA doctor. You need to be proactive in your own health.
Warm soaks with epson salts in the AM will get the hand moving. Gentle exercise while soaking will help.
Call the RA doctor back and tell them it really is painful now worse than before. If they can not see you in the next few days, please refer you to someone who can help you in the mean time.
As a consumer, you need to be proactive on your behalf. PT will help, and splinting is important. Let us all know what happens.
Love and Prayers.
