I do all hand piecing and quilting. I can find many great patterned fabrics for hand work but I'm having trouble finding a good brand of solid colors that is good for hand work.

Several people have suggested Kona fabric for solids, but it's very tightly woven and hard to work by hand. Does anyone know of a brand that makes solids in a more moderate thread count? I want a nice quality fabric that has a nice drape and doesn't wrinkle excessively. I love RJR fabrics but they don't make solid colors.

I really appreciate anyones suggestions.

I'm currently working on my first quilt (hand piecing and will be quilting by hand also)...and it hasn't taken me very long to realize that Kona is more tightly woven that the other fabric in the quilt. I will be watching this post as well to see other responses!

Have you tried Connecting Threads solids? You might order a small amount and see if it is what you like.

Joann's & Hancock Fabrics have a line of solids that is similar to Kona but cheaper and thinner. They also have Kona so you can compare them side by side. The color selection varies greatly, though depending on which store you're in.

Hello Maggie,
welcome to the board!
I am using solid fabrics a lot because I do wholecloths. I tried the Kona cottons once and I must agree, it was quite hard to sew them by hand. As far as I know the Konas have a thread count of 60/60 - like many quilting fabrics! - but I think they are quite coarse.
You could try the Moda Bella Solids. For me they were easier to sew and to quilt compared to the Konas. My favourites are P&B, but they seem to be disappeard from the German market. One of my LQS offers solids by RJR but I haven't tested them yet.
