One - but I also keep it loose enough not to break when it gets washed, knot securely and bury the knot in the batting. So far, as long as I can't break the thread with my hands, it holds up very well. I use either 'hand quilting' thread or I've had excellent luck with the Connecting Threads color coordinated machine quilting thread (by hand). PS: Just a customer, not affiliated.

I use only one.
I cut a length about 36" long and I make one stitch, leaving 18" free. After using the 18" length in one direction, I hide the knot then I go back and thread the other 18" and continue on in the other direction. Saves a lot of knotting :D
