My granddaughter wants me to make her husband a quilt made from Crown Royal bags that belonged to his grandfather. I have been doing research and I haven't seen anything that says to stabilize the bags the way you have to do for a T-shirt quilt. Is that right, I do not have to add iron-on interfacing to the back of the bags? Does anyone have tips on making a quilt like this. I would appreciate it, does the fabric stretch or is it easy to work with?

We made one at our last retreat for a guy that was in charge of the building. We didn't stabilize the bags. We cut out the front of the bag and used it. Good luck with your project.

I'm currently working on my second crown royal quilt. I did not use stabilizer on the fabric from the bags. I would recommend washing the bags with color catchers before you even cut them apart. The purple bags (which was what I have used for the most part) is flannel. After washing and drying, I cut the bags apart, cutting off the top part of the bag that hold the cording for closing the bag. Then I cut the stitching off, cutting as close to the stitching as possible. Then cut the bags to get the largest cut you can get. Out of the small bags I got a 4" x 6" rectangle. I made the first quilt with only the fabric from the bags, front and back. I used black batting, and the binding was a purple cotton.

I did not stabilize mine, but I did starch heavily. Pre wash the bags. I washed them a couple of times. I cut the tops off, and then carefully cut the front and back from the sides. I used the sides as a border strip. I made a template from cardboard and cut pieces from the front and back. Search Crown Royal here on the board. There are many posts and pictures from members who have made them! Also, there are a few Youtube videos I watched.

Before you decide on a pattern, do a search here on Crown Royal and you will be amazed at all the creative patterns used for the bags. Also check out pintrest. Someone has even posted the Moda colors that coordinate well with the purple color. But I lost the thread of that one. I am collecting bags also. I lean toward the star patterns but simple is sometimes better.

Thanks for the feedback. I have googled as much as I could find, plus checked out a couple of videos. I am leaning toward a simple 4 patch with gold and sashing of purple. I didn't realized there was so much here on the quilting board, I read all I could find and it's very informative.

The bags are not stretchy like T-shirts, the stabilizer is to keep the T-shirt’s from stretching out of shape. The bags are flannel. I’ve never found it necessary to stabilize them.

When I made one, I cut the back off, and blanket stitch the front to a gold color fabric. Sashed the squares. You need to wash several times because the purple sure does bleed!!
