Hi i'am new at hand quilting should I begin with using a single or double thread and should I use bees wax to keep thread from notting? Next do I have to use a quilting hoop? Can I just sit with the quilt in my lap. Thank You

I have hand quilted a lot of smaller projects, but not any thin larger than a lap quilt. I don't use waxed thread and never had a problem. I use a hoop, but there aren't any hard fast rules about it. If you don't want to use a hoop that's alright too. Actually there is a book about lap quilting, but I don't know the author. The main thing is to learn to enjoy it. It won't be perfect, but it's very relaxing. Have fun!

I would recommend buying special quilting thread, I use the gutermann brand. Use a single thread. If you take a used dryer sheet and run the thread through it, that helps keep the thread from tangling. You will also want to use a needle designed for quilting, they are much shorter than a normal needle. There are a lot of articles and videos available on line to help you figure out your style of quilting, everyone is different.

I use this thread of coats & clarck http://www.stuff4sewing.com/shades-o...s-262-812.html and am very pleased with the results. I learned to handquilt with hoop so it is more confortable for me. I recommend thimbles to protect yours fingers! i love this of Colonial brand.

Use a single strand of designated hand quilting thread. I don't really care what brand I use as long as it's the color I want. I think I've probably used them all! And I also recommend a 'quilting between' needle. They are shorter and generally a bit stronger than a standard sewing needle. If hand quilting is something you decide you enjoy, you'll eventually want to try different brands of needles to see which you prefer. My go to are Roxanne's usually in #11 or #12 sizes (larger number, smaller needle). Others here have their own preferences. And I find Thread Heaven a better 'conditioner' than beeswax. Cut your thread about in roughly arm lenghts. Use the cut end to thread your needle. Most times I use a hoop but I've quilted from baby to kings both with and without - your preference. And a thimble will be a sure finger saver. Might want to use a rubber finger tip to help pull the needle through the quilt sandwich as well. ENJOY! Don't make yourself crazy about it.
