Flannel Rag Quilt
I'm wanting to make one. I like this fabric: http://www.hingeleyroadquilting.com/...ackbymoda.aspx.
It's $11.00 for a charm pack. I'm stuck on how many charm packs I need for a lap size quilt. So, I'm going to need X # of charm packs for the front, same for the back and , flannel for the center. I don't know how many of each I need but I hadn't planned on spending $100.00 for a lap quilt.

You would be better off using the layer cakes form the same line because you need the extra inch around for ragging, If you use those the squares would be 9 inches around after ragging(4 inches if you use the charms) you would calculate how large you want the quilt 10 squares across and down would leave you with 90 inch by 90 inch quilt and you would need 100 square. for lap If you do 6 by 7 you would have 54 inch by 63 inch and you would need 56 squares, am I making sense

Crazy quilt girl fabric shop has the best price online for charm packs. Old country store has the best on yardage for moda. Hope this helps! There are no fabric stores here so I shop online and rarely buy anything other then moda because I know its quality.

Personally, I don't buy the pre-cuts, although I have gotten some as gifts, they're simply overpriced to me, they have to pay someone to cut them, then they have to be packaged, you simply can't roll them on a bolt. If they have actual yardage of the same fabrics, that's the way I would go, my opinion.

Connecting threads sells precuts for the same price as yardage. I'm not familiar with the quaility of their flannel, but they have several nice looking lines and some in clearance. A 5" charm isn't going to make a very large block when it's ragged. I like seven inches with the cuts at 3/4". Could you use the layer cake and make your cuts 1"? Then you'd have 7" of pattern showing.
