I have a California King bed and I want to make a quilt for it, has anyone made one and if so do you have sample pictures so I can see the drop, etc?

I am somewhat new to quilting about 3-4 years and I have not ever converted a quilt pattern to make it larger and feel a little apprehensive in doing so and would love to see examples.

An easy solution is to make a queen sized quilt per the pattern and add an extra border. Unless you are using the quilt as the bedspread, it doesn't need to go beyond the bottom edge of the mattress on the sides.

Measure the top of the mattress and then the depth.
Calculate the number blocks you need if you want the patchwork to come to the edge. Determine how many of a certain size block you need. then add for overhang.For example. According to a size chart the Calif King is 72" wide and 84 long. If you used 12" blocks that would be 6 blocks wide and 7 blocks long.
Plus the borders for overhang or if you didn't intend to put borders then would need to add blocks to width and length.

I find it easier in situations like this to do a very rough sketch or floor plan of the size I need and then do the calculations. Then I will know how many blocks to make, how much fabric to buy etc.

I have often made up the bed with a sheet the size I need and then measure. Also consider if you are going to cover the pillows with the quilt and take that into account.

Just find a pattern for the largest size quilt you can. Then add extra borders to increase the size. Even if some of the borders are larger on the ends than the sides. or you can add an extra border stripe on ends as your first border and not put any of that color border on the sides. I have also learned to wait to purchase my border fabrics until the main part of quilt is done. You can often add totally different fabrics that coordinate with the center of the quilt. I am sure you will get lots of help from board members. Good luck and enjoy the process.
