Hi Sheila,

Welcome from So CA. Your first step is to buy some fabric to practice on but not ungly ones because trust me you are gonna love what you make at the end  , and go on you tube and search for quilting for beginners or something like that and you will find tons of tutorials. Here is one:

Welcome, from Iowa. Go to your local Quilt shop, and tell them what you have in mind. Quilt shops and their employee are the best of help and can give you lots of hints and Ideas. Start small and challenge yourself at each new project. That way you will know after each project that you want to keep quilting.

By yourself a book, pick a pattern, get all the material that it calls for and then buy a yard or two more of each which will help start your stash and give you extra in case of any mistakes. Just jump right in and follow the directions to the letter and you will do just fine. However, if you do run into any major problems just remember there are many people on this board and I just bet that any one of them would be willing to help you out with wonderful advise. Good luck and happy quilting.

I highly recommend you go to JoAnn Fabrics (if you have one near you) and buy the book "Quilt with Confidence" by Nancy Zieman. I paid $24.99 for mine. (well worth the price!)
Or you can get it from her web site - www.sewingwithnancy.com
Try amazon first. I find that there books are less expensive. The used books are usually in good condition.

Hello from northern NY state: I would pick up a couple of books on quilting and you can do a lot of research on this web sight and many others on the net. Then I would get myself a book that has a pattern, pictures, and instructions on the quilt that you decided to make. Pick out your material and buy extra for any possible mistakes and pick out your thread also. Follow the instructions and take it step by step, and I'm sure you will do just fine.

Welcome from Louisiana. I have been sewing over 50 years and when I decided to try quilting, I took a class at JoAnn's and made a flying geese quilt. I think that is the first step to take. You will love it here, everyone is so helpful.
