Help, Bow Tuck question

I am making a mini bow tuck done something wrong my purse ended up being 11" wide 18" tall what did I do wrong.
:-( :-(
I cut my fabric 7x17 like it said and 5x17. I just don't know what I did.
I got to step 15 and though this is way to tall :cry: .
Help. :cry:

Did you sew the two long sides together? If they were 17 inches to start with they cannot be 18 inches after. Maybe you measured from the wrong end of the ruler (I've done that more than once)
Did you do Step 13? Boxing the corners? That will take up a few inches to form the sides and bottom of the bag.

When you sew the bottom on doesn't that add some inches there in height? I must have cut the fabric wrong is the only thing I could think of that made this happend.will start a new one I will do this till I get it right.Do you think I should cut it down to make the right size?this is like a large tote bag.
I know what I did I cut the fabric way to big. Went back and cut another peice like I never made one and cut the correct size that is what happends when you are talking on the phone and cutting fabric won't do that again thanks everyone who helped. :-P :-P
