I just bought a Brother SE 400 sewing/embroidery machine online from Ken's Sewing Center. Is it necessary to use different type threads on the top and bobbin?

I have a Brother SE 270 and I only use different bobbin thread if I am embroidering a design that is really dense or uses a lot of thread on top. In that case, I use "bobbin thread" in the bobbin. You can buy it at Joann's and I used to be able to also find it at Walmart.

Otherwise, I use the same thread top and bottom if I am just sewing or piecing.

I haven't had any issues this way.

For plain sewing I use same thread top and bottom.

I should have made my question more clear. Sorry. I am referring to embroidering. I guess I should use different thread in the top and bobbin then.

I always use prewound bobbins when embroidering. Your design will be less dense with them.

Sharon
I also us the prewound bobbins for all my embrodery.
The bobbins will last through a design. I found early on that it was way to much trouble to try and have all the different colors for the many many colors of thread.
Hope this helps wirth your ?

Thanks for the help. The salesman did include prewound bobbins with my order so I will be all set!

I have a brother SE350 and use the cheap cone thread from Joanns also coat and clarks on top actually whatever I have. I use bottom line thread on the bottom as it is thinner and a bobbin lasts a long time.

Bobbin thread for embroidery is a thinner thread. I use this only for embroidery. I bought a large spool of bobbin thread, and pre wound several bobbins to have ready.

Since embroidery stitches are so much denser than regular stitching, it is important to use a lower weight thread in the bobbin. Most bobbin thread tends to be 50 or 60 weight while the top embroidery threads are usually 40. It will make a difference in how your design turns out.

As to your purchase being from Ken's Sewing Center, you have, IMHO, gotten the best dealer in the country. They are so supportive and will help you with any questions. If they don't know the answer and tell you they will find out and get back with you, they actually DO IT!

Hope you and your machine have a lot of fun together!
