HELP I need to make block bigger

OK I decided to try a pieced block. A bunch of my friends and I are going to do a pizza box quilt . Everyone wants to do a block that will finish at 12" . SO I need to make it 12 1/2" right for seam allowances. Here is a link to the block I want to make. Can someone help me out I can not for the life of me figure out how to make it be a 12 " block . The instructions for it now make it a 8 " block.I truly will appreciate all the help here I can get I am going to need it . Thanks Cassie

I'm not really great with math..so I would just redraw it on EQ program.
Now..if you don't have that, I would take some paper, measure out and draw a block that is 12" x 12". I would then draw out the block (copying from your selection), then you can measure each piece exactly from this paper pattern that you created. Be SURE to add the 1/2" seam allowance. And also you'll have to cut out the parts that are paper pieced and use this pattern to do the paper piecing.

there's a few ways you could go about this...
1) the easiest would be to put a border around the block to make it a 12 inch block. since this is going to be a sampler quilt you don't need to have the corner patches match up to form a secondary pattern.
2) the next option would be to make the corner patches 5 inches instead of 3 inches and then you could leave the paper piece pattern the way it is and end up with a 12 inch. this kinda throws off the ratio of the sections to each other but it is an easy change to make.
3) and then the next thing you can do is increase the paper piece template to 3 inches on a copy machine and then then corner patches would be 4.5 inches and then you'll maintain the ratio of the sections to each other.

i was worried that you would think the paper piece would be enlarged to 3 inch square and its not.
the paper piece pattern would be 3 inches by 4.5 inches.
and all my numbers are without the seam allowance so you would have to add that in when you make your cuts.

I did a block for a sampler quilt that is being auctioned off for breast cancer awareness.
I was freaking a little because I am so new to quilting and they needed it to be exact! The math is fairly simple when making a patch type block...but I agree with one poster who said build it up and then place a border around it. Then square it up. They wound up liking my block since some of them came back with points that went clear to end without leaving enough to sew other blocks on without messing up the points! Mine could be added easily.

Okay you have a block that is 5" but you would like it to be 12” or do you have a block that is 15" and you would like it to be 6" well here is how I have worked it out :)
Example 1: Current size = 5" and you want a 12" block 12/5 = 2.4 now take the 2.4*100= 240%
Example 2: Current size =15" and you want a 6" block 6/15= .4 now take the .4*100=40%
/ = Dividing * = multiplying
I have created a table 15x15 for fast check on % to be photocopied by. As you can see there are some blank squares :) well dividing and then multiplying with it's self it will always come back as 100% so I have left them blank :)
