Default Riccar 9170 Help Please!

Hello - I have been given this machine to repair but the manual is not on their web site. The problem is that there is a spring broken which is attached under the shuttle hook holder as per the picture below:

The hook seems to have caught this spring and broken it . You can see the spring hanging down to the left of the shuttle housing. I cannot see where the other end of the spring was attached. Neither do I understand the purpose of it. It does not appear in the nearest manual I could find for the 9160.

All advice welcome!

Thanks,
Greg.

Someone may have just stuck it there to attach to the door to keep it partly closed so it doesn't fall open? Or it was attached to the feed plate somehow to keep it similarly locked on? I would think you could safely remove it and I don't think you need it either! I've not seen anything like that before...

I would remove the spring and try sewing without it to see what happens (just turning the wheel by hand; not using electricity!).

Thanks for the advice folks, I will try sewing manually & see what happens.
I got the following reply from Riccar themselves:

We never sold your model here in the USA so I have no information on it. The part looks like the position finger spring, also known as the rotary hook holder spring. It connects on the black position finger however that's all I know about it. Unfortunately we no longer have either the complete position finger or just the spring available. We sold our machines that used this part back in the 1970's and early 1980's. Riccar Japan who made these machine went bankrupt back in 1984 so the parts supply has dried up. Unfortunately I have no diagrams or photos to send you to show the placement of this spring. We are not the original Riccar company that sold these machines and we're are not in the sewing machine business so my knowledge is somewhat limited. Sorry we can't help</pre>
So at least the part has a name and was original even if it's purpose remains a mystery!

Best regards,Greg.
