Trying to use up an impulse buy. Purchased this fabric in a quilt kit dirt cheap on clearance, I didn’t like the pattern and it called for itty bitty pieces so there was a ton of fabric, over 13m. Then I couldn’t figure out what to do with it. Liked the prints too much to cut it up too small. Decided to make a couple of very basic block quilts. Cut the fabric on the bias as some of it was directional and I wanted it on point. Made one and was underwhelmed. Decided to trick this one up just a bit for interest so added the corner blocks (cats cradle?). Forgot about the on point cutting and now I have a problem. I like the on point setting but don’t have fabric to make setting triangles or corner triangles. Should I use black or white/off white and add matching sashing? Just suck it up and use a regular layout? Any other suggestions?

I’m not in love with either but don’t want to waste the fabric and I’m stuck!

Pretty quilt! I would choose my favorite color of the solid looking fabrics and go with that for the set in triangles and I might go with an alternate solid color for the binding. I think black or white would stand out too much. But of course, that's only an opinion, it's your quilt. Great job of not cutting up the patterned fabric.

Oh, I think that is so fun on point! Looking at the mix of colors, I'd probably look for a yellow solid or light print and set up the blocks so the existing yellow ones aren't next to the setting triangles but more together in the middle. I'd probably go with a similar print binding maybe blue with pink and a bit wider than normal even. But I often punctuate the ends of my quilts! Subtle works too but I don't think this binding needs to be shy.

I really like the on pointe setting of the blocks. I'd see if I could find another fabric in a similar pattern/color to use for the setting triangles. There are so many fabrics in the quilt that the setting triangle wouldn't have to be the same as the fabric in the quilt. I like it!

Most Definitely Yes!! to keeping it on-point and finding something for your setting triangles. My first impulse is a go-with-nothing-print/blender, along the same idea as some that are in your mix already. First thoughts are a green or a blue. But then again, a pink/rose/orange'ish or a yellow-orange might be what you want.

Or you might use all those colours/fabrics in the setting triangles, then a stop border, and then a final border. Binding, contrasting? or not?? ... TBD once you figure out the rest!

You can add setting triangles of an assortment of prints or just a single one. If a single print, then maybe adding that one as solid squares several times in the quilt to tie it into the edges. To make it old fashioned, use white or cream setting triangles, a small stop multicolored border (about 2 inches) and then white again as a larger final border.

To modernize it, find a black with white print and make a secondary pattern within the quilt by putting in some solid squares, then use the print for your setting triangles, a stop border, then the print again.

Or sash the whole thing with the color of your choice, but I wouldn't use one you have very much of in the quilt. That would end up making everything flow together when you want it to stand out. Then use the same color for your setting triangles.

Love the block design and fabric colors!

I would make the setting points from a mix of other triangles. You could mix up the colors for each one. It's a perfect opportunity to play!

on point and no sashing--setting triangle from whichever solid you like the best. Very cheery and a nice quilt.

Love your blocks and your layout! For setting triangles I like that darkest magenta pink color. If you could find a blender or a batik that coordinates with that, I think it would be a good next step. Or you could do multi colors of setting triangles as already suggested. I don’t think black or white work with this quilt. IMO it would tone the quilt down too much. This quilt is like a wildflower garden and needs to make its statement all the way to the edge. If you have some bright blenders or batiks in your stash, why not lay them out with your quilt top and see if anything speaks to you? You might also get away with using a print if it’s sufficiently bright and the pattern works with what you already have.

I definitely like the on point look also. I think those bright colors would look great with a dark sashing and coordinating side triangles. maybe a dark navy or black.
