I want to make this pattern, but I want to start with a 9 1/2 block instead of 8.5. How wide would I then cut the strips??? Would I just divide by 4??

If you cut them 9 1/2" and square to 9", then divide 9 by 4 you should have 2 1/4" strips.

Your strips would have to be cut at 2 3/4 inches wide to get a 9 1/2 inch unfinished block made up of four strips, like the quilt pictured.

Yes, the theory is the same, no matter what size block you start out with
I really like this pattern, so simple but looks way more complex :D:D:D

It makes the block 9.5" each of the four strips need to be 2 7/8 cut. HTH

I am not sure this is correct... I think 4 X 2 3/4" = 11"

This is getting really confusing. I assumed that you meant 9 1/2" squares...maybe that is not what you meant.

Okay... If you start out with a 9" square and divide it by 4, each strip would be 2 1/4" wide.

If you start with 9 1/2" and divide it by 4, each strip would be 2 3/8" wide :D:D:D

BUT***

These blocks are cut diagonally, and stitched.... so now the dimension of the block has changed

Edited*** So you square it up to 9" and then divide it by 4 :D:D:D

Yes, but there will be three seams joining the four strips, each of which takes 1/2", so she WILL have a 9 1/2 inch block after sewing the three seams!
The important question is whether the 9 1/2 inch is the size square to start, or if the goal is a 9 1/2" pieced block to put into the quilt, or a 9 1/2" finished size of the block after it is sewn to the blocks around it in the quilt!

You're not subtracting the seam allowances. Every time you sew two strips together, 1/2 inch gets subtracted from the total of the 11". Sewing four strips together will subtract 1/2" three times or 1 1/2 inches. 11 minus 1 1/2 equals 9 1/2. Then when the blocks are joined to each other, an additional seam allowance is taken off both sides, equally a 9 inch finished block.
