I am hoping I get some sort of idea how much yardage I will need to make an Irish Chain smaller than a twin but a good sized throw. All the places I have looked I cant get any info for the size I want to make. I did purchase Quilt In Day Irish Chain book but the 'squares' are cut larger than I want to use. I would like to make this with 2 1/2 inch strips. Anyone have a pretty good guestimate ???

I'd have to sit down with graph paper and draw it all out. Bet someone with with EQ could do it! Good luck!

since there are no triangles in this pattern, you can just use smaller squares. take the final width of your smaller irish chain, divide it by the number of squares in your larger pattern, this will be the size of your finished squares. add 1/2" to the cutting size. you could round this number down for a nice cutting size and finish your smaller irish chain with wider borders, if necessary. just follow the larger pattern layout. I just completed a double irish chain with 2.5 inch strips. It will finish out (with border) at 48 x 60 approximately. A yard each is more than enough, but just multiple the 2.5 inch strips by how many blocks you are going to make.

60 x 60 inch is a typical "Throw"
2 1/2 inch Cut strips/Squares = 2 inch size finished strips/Squares.
How many squares do you need in a horizontal row? 30
How many squares do you need in a Vertical row? 30
How many 2 1/2 inch squares are in a 60 x 60 Throw? Multiply 30 x 30, = 900

How long of a 2 1/2 inch wide STRIP do you need to obtain 30 Squares?
5 inches = 2 squares; 10 inches = 4 squares; 20 inches = 8 squares; 36 inches = 14 squares
If you have a 42 inch (Width of Fabric) STRIP, how many Squares can you cut from it? 16.
If you have a 36 inch Length of Fabric, how many blocks can you cut from it? 14

In order to have NO WASTE, Each length of fabric should be a multiple of 5: cutting a length of 35 inches (or 40) rather than 36 inch will yield no wasted fabric.:

Now, you need to know if you are making your Irish Chain with ONLY TWO Fabrics???? or more, like a Scrappy Quilt? Find your pattern of a Single Block, and simply COUNT how many dark; how many light squares you need. Simple as PI!

Do you want to do a single, double or triple Irish Chain? How many colors or just a scrappy? If you could give me an approx. size and colors, I could get you some yardage.
