Question Rulers for Scallops and Prairie Point/Rick Rack

At a sewing expo I recently saw a demonstration of Quick Points Rulers. I really wanted to get the 1" scallop rule and had to blink at the prices. Are scallops and prairie points difficult to make without these conveniences? There was another vendor demonstrating a prairie point device made of stainless steel that one could iron on. Once again, worth the price? I hesitate to invest money and storage space in things I don't really need. Thanks for your feedback.

i've made both without special rulers/templates. they are not difficult. certainly, the items you saw are a convenience, speed the process, and may help with accuracy. but i'm retired, and enjoy the quilting process without hurrying.

Prairie points are not that difficult at all.

I've seen nice border treatments that look like scallops but are actually two sided half circles inserted inbetween the top and backing all around the quilt. cute!! no ruler needed for that.

I have the 1" prairie point one and used it to make Jumbo rick rack. It works great. The jumbo rick rack is expensive and this ruler saved me money. I decided to sell the big rick rack in one yard lengths at a craft show and made the cost of the ruler in one sale. One woman bought all I had so I lucked out. I haven't used it in a while, I need to make more for my guild's sale table. Thanks for reminding me.

I have the Scallops, Vines & Waves template from Quilt in a Day that I have used at least a dozen times. I love it. Here is a link http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponline/rulers.asp Scroll down the page a bit.

My grandmother used a salad plate to make a scalloped border and they were perfect!

Gail B - Thanks for the tip about that ruler - it looks like it is can be easily adjusted to any length/size with good results!! I haven't seen the other "new" rulers but this one seems to do the trick for scallops.

Going to the Sewing Expo (Puyallup, WA) can be dangerous! You get mind overload of all the 'new' and latest gadget. Sometime they make our life easier and other times we purchase items that just sit in our drawers or on our shelves.

I have made my prairie points with a square piece of fabric, folded twice. A class that I took this last weekend on boarders, suggested for scallops ~ EZ scallop rulers.
