Hi. A coworker is going through chemo. I'd like to make her a nice, soft raggy quilt so that she can wrap up in it. How big do I want to make this? What would be a good size? I'm finding mattress and comforter/bedspread sizes, but what would be a good size for a "throw"? I don't even know what to call it.

How tall is she? You want to make the throw big enough to let her cover herself in it and snuggle comfortably. I think 70 x 70 might be a good size. Or you can make it longer than wider instead of a square. Some people make lap throws smaller, but I like them to be generous in size so you can really snuggle into them. You may want to consider backing the quilt with flannel or fleece to make it extra snuggly. You are doing a wonderful thing for you co-worker.

I make " chemo " quilts for special folks.( my daughter made me one several years ago). I like to use high loft polyester batting,and lightweight fleece for the backing. The size is personalized: the height of the human,plus 12 inches to add for tuck under feet. The width of the human,plus tuck under - 18 inches. You may need to add for fluffiness -of- human factor. Then make it into quillow format or as tote bag to use while going to and from chemo,doctors etc. be sure to choose something bright colored,hopeful etc,

I meant to indicate that my friend/coworker is tall and thin. I am going to make the whole thing out of flannel, with batting (warm and natural) in the middle. It will be soft and cuddly (I have a couple myself!). I'm modifying the pattern I usually use to get this done quickly for her treatments. She has one this coming week. I think I'm going to cut 9" blocks, that will be 8" finished with 1/2" to "rag". If I do a 8x9 block quilt, it will be approximately 64" x 72".

What do you think? I want to hit my favorite fabric store today, (even though I was already there Monday). Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
