I purchased this pattern ...

http://www.hollyhillquiltdesigns.com...products_id=19

I'm making the runner with Michael Miller Fairy Frost Fabric with black as the background.

Runner is made but here's where the troubles started...

The directions call for me to "applique the stars, candy corn and vine". There is a layout diagram - full scale but no applique tempates.

For the stars I have used Steam a Seam Lite 2 and will have no issue with appliqueing them.

What method would you use to make the green vine and the candy corn?? I tried to paper piece the candy corn and was not happy with the resutls. I'm thinking about making a template for the candy corn and using Steam a Seam -- make an whole piece of candy corn in orange, then a smaller piece in yellow and then a smaller piece in white. I would then put a blanket stitch at the edges where those pieces meet.

How about for the green vine??? I can't even come up with an idea to make a wavy continuous vine.

(side note: this was not a cheap pattern - and really the only "directions" were what made the center panel which isn't difficult; this will make me reluctant to purchase other patterns without cracking them open and reading them first!)

Thanks for any help you may have!
Sharon

Email the seller and ask if templates were supposed to be included? Can't hurt.

I agree with Magpie. Surely they were just left out accidentally. I would give them a call. If that is all they provide, I would not uy another pattern at that price from them.

I think I would use the white or yellow first on the candy corn. The orange would probably show thru if you tried to put white over it. Can you use bias tape for the pumpkins vines?

If the layout is full size, you can trace the designs onto the fusible from that. I would just make each color a little bigger so that you can slightly overlap them for the candy corn. For the vine, they probably expect you to use bias strips. They do sell bars that are supposed to help you make thin strips like that. I haven't tried them, but it looks intriguing. If you don't want to use that, you could buy a package or two of the ready made bias strips.

I have used a long running stitch on some things, using floss or pearl cotton. Both can be found at Hobby Lobby or Joann's

For that price there should definitely have been templates!

for your vines you probably need to make bias strips (bias curves and still lies flat)
you can add fusable to the back of the fabric before cutting the bias strips if you want- then join them for what ever length you need them to be (like joining binding strips)
lots of times the layout diagrams are also your applique patterns- number the pieces- trace them with tracing paper-leaving a little space between each piece so you can cut them apart- i usually add a little bit extra where pieces will go under another piece so the top piece has something to (grab) and there is no gaps between pieces when i put them together
