When giving a quilt as a donation for a benefit auction---would you wash it first or leave it lookng new?

I'd wash, dryer dry til just damp and then lay flat patting it into shape and let it finish drying.

wash it, and then blocking it will lay it flat and crisp, giving it that 'before' washing look (I just did the blocking for the first time, a few weeks ago, for the same reason, a benefit auction quilt, and sure like how it worked).

every single quilt i make i wash and dry as the last step after binding- i would never give a quilt to anyone (charty or not) before washing/drying it....unless for some reason it was never to be washed- then i would make sure there was clear instructions stating it never be washed....but i don't make quilts that could never be washed-even my wool and silk quilts are washed- so i do it before it goes anywhere- it is the final step of completion in my world

I always wash on gentle, no fabric softener, line dry. That makes sure all of the markings are out and it IS washable before I give it as a gift. Many of the chairties I quilt for ask you to wash before donating it.

Would you please explain your method of blocking the quilt??

Here's how I block a quilt. You'll need plenty of space depending on size. Lay flat on floor with some bath towels underneath, proceed to pat and pull lightly into the shape it is supposed to be, with everything laying flat and square. I then put something heavy at each corner. I then leave it on the floor for the length of time it takes to finish drying. I do dry it a bit in the dryer til just damp before I begin to block. I have one on the floor now in blocking mode.

I placed the quilt in the washer, filled w/water, soaked, then spun water out, bought two pieces of 4x8 insulation board from Lowes ('bout $20), laid the two insulation boards side by side, and taped them together, making one 8 x 8, laid the wet quilt on the board (or more like styrofoam board), stretched it out, made sure it was all nice and square, pinned all four sides down to the board, let it dry about 24 hours, pulled the pins up the next day and all nice flat and crisp, no crinkles from washing

I've wash it and put it in the dryer to almost dry and then lay it somewhere, somehow to finish drying. I check for mistakes - like if the seams were off and it came apart! I'd sooner it happen for me so I can fix it then have them wash it and have problems.
