I am not a hand quilter but I have a friend that does. She sews an piece of muslin to the edge wide enough to stay in the hoop. When finished she just takes of the muslin and binds it.

I pin an extra piece of fabric -- or a towel, or whatever -- to the edge of the quilt and then put the hoop on. Sometimes I just take a strip of fabric -- pin one end to the quilt, the other end through the hoop and pull it snug (I usually put 3 on). The hoop sleeve would work well, but I can never find those gadgets when I need them.
I don't do much hand quilting any more, I miss it and will have to start handstitching one. It's enjoyable.

I usually just 'float' the sandwich in the hoop when I get to that point. In other words...no extra fabric or anything. Just have the edge of the quilt sort of in the middle of the hoop floating in the air. Never had wave issues and it works for me.

I had this same problem when I tried using either a hoop or a floor frame. Now I don't use either one. I just pin, pin, pin and quilt in my lap. Works for me and is much more relaxing.
