Thanks Coventry! I always thought the stitches went thru the paper. Guess I need to do a little more research. Just in time for tomorrow when I have to sit with my Father in Law. I agree, it's a great life!

On Quilting Arts episode 1308 called Quilting Simplified, Julia Woods shows how to do hexies from circles-no templates or papers/plastic needed. If I decide to do hexies I am doing it this way. Also due to weight I would think batting would not be needed unless you want a VERY warm quilt. She also has a book that shows this method. It is easy enough if you watch the show that the book probably wouldn't be needed unless you need more instructions or the patterns.

paper pieces is where I get mine from.They have free shipping this week. I love yours but the one I am making is all hand done and will be hand quilted so I trim the extra material from the back.Mine is in going to be 56 blocks and is 1/3 put together .love your work. paperpieces.com

I so would like to try a hexie table topper since my fingers don't like hand quilting much anymore with the very small stitches but have no clue how to do these and would like to watch a video or just see a written tute. I love doing hand sewing and thought maybe this would be the answer. Can someone suggest some good sites I could check out. thank you so much for you help. Sharon

CoventryUK, that is how I do mine. Also working on 1inch Hexie's with 2.5 squares. Sometimes I cut the excess fabric, sometimes not. I also use heavy paper or excess photo sheets and cut them all at one time. No problems removing them as I go and if taken care of can be reused. [ATTACH=CONFIG]475500[/ATTACH][ATTACH=CONFIG]475501[/ATTACH] Right now I'm just sewing them in color groups so not really a flower garden. Still trying to visualize how I want the outcome. From the 2nd pic, you see where the paper is left in till all 6 sides are sewn, then I just pop them out.

If you cut them from paper or cardboard, how important is it for them to be cut exact? Is it ok to be a little off or would it be better to just bite the bullet and spend the money for forms? I printed some off but when cutting them out they are just a hair off. Also what type thread does anyone use for stitching them together?
