Hi everyone, does anyone know of a tip to working with homespun material? My son brought hime some and says, "Mom make me a quilt out of this, I love the colors!!" So of course Mom says "Why sure Son anything for you." I think maybe not anything anymore. I hate this stuff, it moves, it stretches, and it is kinda itchy. Please help, I promised him I would make it and he never asks me for anything, so I think I need to make this quilt.

Hmmm I wonder if you need to back it with some light fusible interfacing so you can sew the top together without it moving and stretching on you.

What kind of quilt are you going to make? It frays easily, so is often used for rag quilts. Here is a link:

I have found that spray starch or sizing is helpful and of course you must handle it carefully to keep from stretching.

I agree with the starching, heavy if you can. Than use blocks that don't need alot of handling, simple patterns. You will be OK.

Wash it carefully, hang dry. It tightens up the weave, then starch like crazy. Some homespun is woven tighter than others. I use a small stitch when piecing. It makes handsome quilts.

pre-wash, starch, iron...cut 1 or 2 layers at a time- i've made 2 or 3 homespun quilts-my brother's love them- here is a pic of the last one i made.

Very nice quilt.
I am making a very simple 4 patch, so with a lot of starch maybe I can get it done. Thank you for all of your suggestions.

Good luck with making this for your son. Since you are doing a 4-patch it shouldn't be to hard to work with. I'm making a table runner for my daughter using homespun. She bought the fabric and said "her Mom this is what I want". It really isn't bad to work with but not my usual stuff. Made my granddaughter scarves that was really nice with this fabric because it does fray really bad.
