Default How Do I Enlarge This Quilt

Hi - I normally know how to enlarge a quilt, but I'm stumped on this one. My niece picked out this pattern - she likes a clean, modern look. It's called Fieldcrossing Quilt. It is a free pattern. Here is the link: https://www.favequilts.com/Bed-Quilt...-Quilt-Pattern. It's the top one that comes up. When you click on it, it will take you to Cloud9 fabrics and there is a place in the middle of the page to download free pattern. It is for a 60" x 72" quilt. I want to make a queen size, say 88 x 99" or so. I
The pattern calls for a center square of 4 1/2", then triangles around there. I was thinking I could use a 6" square, but I don't know how to make cuts of other fabrics (triangles and other pieces). So sorry this is confusing. Can anyone help me? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks so much!
LaDonna

Maybe make the sashing strips 4" instead of 3". That would help some, then put borders around it to get the size you want.

According to the pattern, each pieced strip is 6 inches--5 1/2 finished--and each sashing is 3 inches--2 1/2 finished. So, one set of pieced strip plus sashing would equal 8 inches finished. You could make 11 of these sets for 88 inches in width and then add the extra sashing piece to the offside. That would make just over 90 inches in width.

After reading the pattern again and doing some figuring, I would add one set of pieced blocks (plus sashing of course) to the height. Then I think it would actually work to have 1,2,3,4,5,6,5,4,3,2,1 pieced blocks in the vertical strips. That keeps the integrity of the pattern without messing with changing the sizes of the pieced blocks. It does mean that you have to make more pieced blocks tho.

Nice pattern. Thanks for sharing.

Sometimes my old brain will just not want to work, so I go back to the old ways. I draw the block out on graph paper, cut out the pieces and lay them on bigger paper. Then I can move them around until I find a workable size. Be careful because you could end up with really odd dimensions on the triangles. But adding borders and increasing the sashing should work. Adding additional colored borders will add a bunch. If you are looking at an additional 18" to the width and add 2 colors borders of 3", that already takes up 12" needed. And adding 1" to the sashings would give you another 8" so you wouldn't have to change the blocks at all. The bigger issue would be the length because you are looking at adding 27"! You could do the borders and sashing thing and add one more 'row' of blocks (so the sides were three wide instead of two wide). This would increase your length without distorting the pattern. Please post pix of what you decide to do.

I agree with GingerK, I would extend the pattern, more rows and more “columns” so to speak. I would be concerned if you started making things bigger or wider it might alter the look and ultimately become more complicated.

Thank you all so much for your help. I'll play around with your suggestions and let you know what I come up with. I really appreciate everyone's expertise. Maybe I will have some time this weekend to figure out what I am going to do. Happy Thursday to everyone!
