Planning on going this week to Athens Oh Dairy Barn to see Quilt National '11 and just wondered if any of QB members have an entry.

It is at the Dairy Barn in Athens Oh, their cultural arts center. It is going on all summer through Labor Day.

Yes, I found out a couple of years ago that this show- Quilt National that is put on every other year was started by a group as a venue for art quilts. Some are very different and strange. But there are also very beautiful ones. Several years ago when I first went there was a landscape that looked like you were walking on a path in a forest on an autumn day. I hadn't gone for several years, but did go the last two times. Last time (in 2009) I went a quilt was a portrait of a woman's mother done in yo-yos and from across the room it looked like a painting. Another person did a piece about 24" by 48" of pieced blocks about an inch big made from scrap fabric that looked like a building. But there are entries from everywhere, including other countries. I can definitely understand that if one didn't know they are art quilts how it would be disappointing. But there are some gems too.

Even numbered years the Dairy Barn tries to have an exhibit of traditional quilts, but it isn't always all summer. It might only be a month, and maybe not in the summer. Last summer they exhibited a collection of antique Amish quilts. It was very nice to see.

Sounds interesting! I went to a similar quilt show this summer at a local museum, also in a heritage barn. It was "different' and not the norm of what we'd expect. While at first I went "gag", I decided, I'm here now, make the best of it. And I did .... we can always learn something from other styles and techniques, and once I got over the initial shock, I enjoyed my visit and appreciated the work, picking up some ideas.

When I see the venue as the Dairy Barn, I'm wondering if this quilt picture of mine should be there ......

I didn't mean to discourage anyone......I just wanted you to know that the quilt were "different"......
That was Not what my friends wanted to see.......
I things it is "a GOOD THING" to think out of the box sometime.
I guess I should have said that the Quilts there were Display Only...no cuddling up with them.... lol
PS Quilt E Your quilt would have been great there... This is cattle land!!! They would have loved it!!!!!!

luv-e I think it was very helpful of you to let folks know it is not a traditional quilt show. Even though some look familar there are also the very different ones.
And QuiltE yes your quilt would have been fine there--you also could have printed the picture out on cloth and embellished and quilted it and it would have fit in too.
They don't allow pictures to be taken so I don't have those to post but I did find a link with the ones given awards, they did look better in person. Two comments I have, Dandylions the white puffs were acheived with white tulle and stitches. the Greek one is all black background and then colored batting between two black cloth layers were connected and one edge was glued (I think) onto the background in a way that was ruffled and such to form the words and the edge faceing the viewer were were cut in a sculpted or scallop way to expose the colored batting, shaping written words. I don't think one could tell that from the picture.

StarShine ... no I think my cow would be too conventional for the competition there! And certainly not to the quality and ability of those in the show. Just that the Dairy Barn would have been like going to its Home Sweet Home!! :) Thanks for the link ... I enjoyed reading about the background of the venue.
