I want to make a maple leaf quilt and found the block at quilters cache but it is a 12 inch block and I want a 8 or 10 inch block. Im not sure how to figure this. I have EQ5 and I designed what I want there so I have the yardage I need. Im trying to figure out how to strip cut this too, instead of cutting one block at a time. Any suggestions?

The Maple Leaf block is based on a 9 patch, so it will easiest to make your blocks with the patches evenly divisible by 3...

    So 1 1/2 inch patches will yield a block 4 1/2 inches
2 inch patches will yield a block 6 inches
    2 1/2 inch patches = 7 1/2 block
    3 inch patches = 9 inch block
    etc.

so to make an 8 or 10 inch block will be difficult to cut.

At any rate, to figure the sizes to cut,

for the square patches add 1/2 inch to the finished size of the patches
for the 1/2 square triangles, add 7/8 inch to the finished size of the patches and cut a square, then cut in half on the diagonal.

Using the 9 inch block as an example:

The square pieces will be cut 3 1/2 inches
The triangles will be cut from a square 3 7/8 inches cut on the diagonal

If you still want to make an 8 inch block,

divide 8 by 3 and add 1/2 and 7/8 inches to the corresponding pieces.

Let me know if this needs more clarification....

In the November issue of "Quick Quilts" by McCall's on Page 8 are the instructions for a 9 X 9 inch Maple Leaf Block. The finished quilt size is
78 1/2 X 99 1/2. I hope this helps you. The quilt is called fluttering leaves.

If I'm not using EQ5, I use this to calculate the yardage, it has different shapes
