Default how to calculating a quilting design on borders?

Been searching on the net all afternoon on a way to calculate measurements for fmq designs on borders.
I thought I had it figured out last night but it didn't work. I want to fmq half-circle designs so I measured the length of the completed top and then divided that measurement by the diameter of the circle. (I was using a dessert plate). I was off by more than half a plate.
Since I'm a beginner of fmq, I need to draw out the design on the borders first with water soluble ink. Any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks!
Peggy

I am sure there are smarter people who could figure it out easier for you but I'm old school and do it by hand. I tape together telephone book pages (you can use whatever paper you have) to the exact border size and trace out my pattern on them. Once I have it perfect, I then transfer the perfected design onto my border. If it's a simple outline, I just cut down one side of the line on the paper and trace out the edge onto the border.

A relatively easy way is to measure the length and the width of the quilt ... minus the seam allowances and a tad bit more. Then you can use your calculator to see what size fits best. You can stretch out a bit or take in a bit to make the circles fit, if they are only a tad bit off. You can make a tracing paper [like Golden Threads] or a freezer paper template to check for fit.
