Default ? about using decorative stitches in quilting

do they start out locking stitches or do you still need to pull up your thread and put you machine to 0 before you start?
Thanks Gale

You might try to make a sample first. When I used decorative stitches I pulled my thread
and buried them afterwards. I'm afraid if I set it to "0" I might lose part of the pattern or
something.

I have not done anything special with my threads-I try to overlap the stitching if I am going around the quilt, but if I'm going up and down or back and forth, I just hold the fabric firm so the machine can take a couple of stitches in one place and that seems to work great.

I do pull up my threads so there is no nesting underneath.

My Viking will do decorative stitches on the quilts for maybe a yard, then the stitches start loosing the pattern. This is the second Viking I've had with the same results. I think it would probably do okay with a thin batting but not with the batting I use for Hospice quilts.
