How many machine bind their quilts?

I do machine binding occasionally and for me the decorative stitches work very well. It adds another dimension to the quilt as well as it isn't as noticeable if you 'wobbled' off the edge like a straight stitch. It certainly cuts the time down!!

Mostly I stitch the folded binding on the front and then in the evenings I stitch it by hand on the back. I have made a couple of quilts that you turn inside out and also one where I brought the binding to the front. I like to stitch by hand as then it looks nicer--to me but have friends that always put bindings on with machine. I do the bindings in the evening when I am more relaxed. It works for me. Also the binding seems to get the most wear and it is easier replaced...not that I've ever done that but have an old one here that I will replace the binding with a new one. Have lots of real old fabric and feed sacks.

I hand sew on ones that are not toss arounds. I just don't like the look of machine sewn, at least not mine. I have tried the back to front , the decoritive stitch etc. I like the plain smooth look of the hand sewn binding. But I realize there are people who can do the machine sewn much better than I and ones who just can't do hand sewing anymore. Also each quilt is different. If I am making a wall hanging good chance the binding is going to be machine sewn After all no one will see the back.

I hand sew some my quilts when doing the binding but since I tried the binding with the flange, I have done machine binding & quite like it. The little bit of flange gives the quilt a little pop of extra colour & if you are careful when stitching, it is almost un-noticeable. Of course, you sew the binding on the back of the quilt first then bring it to the front & sew that last. I say, whatever works for you, then do it.

It's the easiest way to get a beautiful binding that's machine sewn. After you do the first one you'll love the way they turn out. My latest is this one:
