If you change it you might not have enough fabric in length, just leave it.

Me too. That way the side border strips aren't so long and sometimes I don't have to piece.

I think the reason folks do the sides first is because you need shorter pieces for the sides if you do that. Not a rule, just about saving fabric.

I read somewhere that an easy way to remember is that you put your clothes on first (side boarders) and you put your shoes and hat on last (top and bottom).

It usually takes less fabric to put the side borders on first then the top & bottom ones, but I don't think there's any quilt police that will come & get you!

I had to go look at my patterns. I know some say sides first and then top, and some said top then sides. Depends. So I think you are totally safe. :):)
