Default If a quilt gets wet or damp -

If a quilt gets damp/wet for any reason -

Do not leave it wadded in a heap - spread it out and air dry it if you can't get around to washing it right away.

However, all stains are easier to remove when treated as soon as possible after they happen.

If wet fabric is left in a wad or in a laundry basket - dyes can migrate - even from previously washed fabric.

This was one of my many mistakes - I am sure I will make some new ones!

Bundled up wet fabric will also become moldy, so sooner is always better for cleaning/drying it.

That's what got me started quilting … LOL

I had a quilt with just the right colors in it that I had purchased. It was in the bedroom at our lake place. I took it to the cleaners to have it washed (my machine wasn't big enough) and left it in the cleaning bag until we returned to the lake the following season. Apparently it wasn't completely dry when the cleaners put it in the bag, as the colors had bled, and I didn't know how to fix it. But I wanted a quilt for the bed in just the right colors and couldn't find another one to purchase … so I decided to make my own … The rest is history ...

I always wash and dry my quilts after binding is on. If I don't feel sure they are dry I spread it over my glass topped DR table and leave it several hours or overnight. Always works.
