these are very likely the corner squares...look at a picture of the double wedding ring...there are 4 arcs with a 2 color, 4 patch that joins 4 different arcs in their corners... they are typically contrasting to the rest of the arcs...so that may be what they are... are the arcs 2.5" on the straight side?

Last April I posted a picture of a vintage pattern for a double wedding ring. It is probably about the same age as the pieces you have. If you would like I could post it again.

I have been quilting since 1992 and have never made a quilt without a pattern. I wouldn't know where to start. Wow! To me, that's amazing that so many people make up their own patterns. I would love to try. How do you start? How do you figure out the correct sizes of each piece? I see quilts I like, but I always think if they made it a little different, it would be more to my liking. I'd love to know how to make my own pattern. Any help?

you simply draw the block or circle in the exact size you want, draw all lines involved, then label, photograph or duplicate, and cut each piece apart. Now add 1/4" on all edges and begin to piece....

I would look on the tutorials on here, quite a while back, someone did a tutorial. I don't remember who it was though, maybe Patrice.

Looking at your pieces I do think they were intended for a Double Wedding Ring quilt. If possible I would be looking for the rotary cutting plastic templates for DWR. If they are the right size I would use the already pieced sections and recut them with the plastic templates to size (I have seen them but it's been a while) You could draw up the pattern close to the size but a little smaller so you could neaten the original pieces before piecing or find a good pattern and bring it to a copier and enlarge or reduce the pattern to match the pieces. Good luck!

I have one too!! Top is done but havent started quilting. My only UFO. I've had it t least 20 years. I'm not happy with the way it went together. Will find a "no quilt police home" and finish it up!! LOL

you may even find the pattern cut from heavy cardboard some where in you stash. I did in my mothers stuff.

Yes, they are for a wedding ring quilt. A popular pattern you should be able to find on the internet. Since you already have the 'ring' sections, you may have to make the rest of the pattern. A pattern you find may not work with what you already have.
