FYI, start a computer file of different style of quilts: [1] for 2 color quilts, [2] for 3 color quilts, and so on. This has been a great resource for me to use when there is a special request.

Hey with three colors I love all of the suggestions, rail fence, jacob's ladder and irish chain.... and the pinwheel is another good idea... log cabin is one of my favorite patterns... you could tie the theme with his graduation such as "ladder to success" using jacob's ladder or "reach for the stars" make sawtooth stars with all of his favorite colors..
log cabin can be " home is where you come from to reach your goals" or always come home to find love and support..
Just throwing out ideas... he will love the quilt because it is made with love..

My mother made a Disappearing 9-Patch in three colors and said it was the easiest quilt she has ever pieced (and she's done quite a few). Use the "touch of blue" for the center block. It doesn't look like an easy quilt once it's pieced back together, but soooooo simple to put together.
