You are saving time as a nifty quilter!--how's that? Seriously, IF I had an heirloom piece I would consider having it quilted by a longarmer.
Their work/experience far outweighs my skills w/ my home machine.

Soooo, I think you are still a quilter.

You hit the nail on the head. As a longarm quilter and piecer, nothing hurts my soul more than seeing a beautifully pieced Lone Star or Double Wedding Ring quilted with an edge to edge design or just meandered.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong, in itself, with a edge to edge or meander design. I'll do them on quilts with busy fabric or your basic Turning 20 pattern. I'm not going to waste someone's money on custom quilting when it won't show!
I always consider the relationship between the piecer and longarm quilter as a partnership. They provide their piecing skill and my job is to bring out the beauty of the top.

I call myself a "quilter" even though piecing is my passion. I love combining pretty fabrics with the perfect (or almost perfect) pattern. I am not afraid to tell people that either. My daughters can find a longarm quilter when I'm gone!!! I do send some out to be quilted and I do hand and machine quilt some, it's just not my favorite part. We do what we can and what makes us happy. With the economy the way it is if I'm not hurting the family budget, what does it matter. I also have been known to say I collect quilt tops (cause they fit the budget better). "Piecer" or "quilter" it all jives for me. HAPPY NEW YEAR and HAPPY PIECING!!!!

I've decided that I will do both. The quilt police questioned me but I refused to talk!
