Default Can a novice "quilt" a sprig of thyme? Are there short cuts for this wedding quilt??

Hi! I've been tasked with making a square for a wedding quilt and I'd love to do it justice but I'm not a quilter-- at least not yet. I'd love to do a sprig of thyme (the bride's fave) and an orchid (the nat'l flower of Venezuela, for the groom).
Anyone have ideas on making this accessible for a novice??
Thanks in advance!
Meg

Welcome to the boards from Texas.

Here's a free orchid paper pieced quilt block that you might try for the groom. I'm still looking for a sprig of thyme. Maybe you could find some fabric that had thyme in it & fussy cut around it & applique it on a block for the bride. Maybe even do the same thing if you don't want to paper piece. I'm sure orchid fabric would not be to hard to find.
Here's a fabric with orchids in it:

Ooh, that's beautiful, thanks! As someone who-- literally-- would need instructions to sew on a button, could anyone direct me to a YouTube video showing me how to make that?

I added more to my answer above.
Here's a you tube showing the basics for paper piecing. A pattern is more complicated when you have more pieces. Just search on the web for you tube paper piecing instructions & tons will come up for you to watch. I think as a novice you might be better off making a block from fabrics that have thyme and orchids in them.

How much time do you have? Most people with no sewing experience would have difficulty acquiring the skills to do paper piecing or applique. How about machine embroidery? Quilt blocks can be embroidered, and there are people who will do it for you.

I found this commercial pattern for a thyme sprig:https://www.embroiderydesigns.com/pr...e2178_010.aspxand

this page of orchids to choose from:https://www.embroiderydesigns.com/si...rchtext=orchid

Edit: Actually, I found this page of thyme embroidery patterns to choose from:https://www.embroiderydesigns.com/si...archtext=thyme

Sorry, I don't know why I am messing up the editing on this post. I think the links work, though. Just wanted to add that there is a redwork version of thyme also (of course, could be worked in other colors):

I agree that using fabrics with the desired elements is a good idea for a beginner. Have fun with your introduction to quilting!

You might but a piece of fabric with an orchid on it and hand embroider the thyme on it. You could also embroider their names and the wedding date.

You could take a plain piece of cotton fabric and trace one or both onto it with fabric paint sticks. There are some lovely paints available in craft shops.

I would suggest visiting your local quilt store. They would be able to help you with your project and have many great suggestions. They might even suggest a class to get you started.

This was my thought as well. If you don't have a local quilt shop eQuilter has a good selection and they have free patterns you can download as well.
