I have a friend in his 60's who was texting with family about his older sister who was ill and not expected to live (she did, but it was touch and go). He kept ending LOL. My sister in law finally asked him why was he laughing out loud. He thought it meant lots of love. His family tho't he was a little crazy for a bit. LOL!

I deal with acronyms every day. Many business people use acronyms on their business cards for designations. One that throws me everyonce in awhile is the sil. So I try to go with son il or sis-il.

I see them all the time, if I really want to know, since I use Firefox, I am able to highlight, right click and "search Google for". On bad days, I use it a lot!!

This is such a pet peeve of mine. Most of the time I have no idea what is meant by "initials." I didn't even know what the word acronym meant so had no clue where to look up the key. I proofread everything and circle the errors. It's a curse that I was taught in school, used in my work for 49 years, and never got over.

When I write something, I want the reader to understand what I mean. I always spell out words, even on texts. Rant over...

You are SO right!!! If you go to any of the larger bookstores and peruse some of their books specifically on acronyms you'll see that some have at least 10 different meanings for the same acronym...not good and can lead to a lot of misunderstandings. Was, also, taught if you are teaching something to a large group to make your presentation so clear that even a child could understand since the audience is made up of varying intellects. Since almost everyone now uses a keyboard instead of writing everything long hand it takes literally only seconds to type it out.
