Pillow sham suggestions
In the process of changing our mattress. Believe the size difference will make a lot of my quilts inadequate in length to go over the tops of the pillows. That being said if I pull the quilt completely flat and use shams, believe it will work. Can anyone point me in the right direction to sew a pair? Thanks for your input.

Flange edge shams are pretty easy to make. Measure your pillow cases and add 4.5 inches to the width and measure for the length of your pillows. Cut one piece of fabric for the top that size. Cut two pieces for the back and cut them long enough they'll overlap in the center. Hem the overlap ends. Pin the three pieces right sides together and sew with a quarter inch seam. Turn right side out and sew 2 inches in from the outside edge to form the flange.

I've attached a picture of the shams I made for my Mom, when I gave her this quilt. I found a square I liked, and just built the top out to the size I needed. I have lots of shams in my house, so I just measured the finished size, and went from there. I did the flange on the outside edge, as Scissor Queen suggested, and then two pieces on the back. One over lapping the other. I did put a piece of batting behind the front the whole, flange included when I quilted it. This kept the flange from flapping and getting sloppy looking.

Thank you Scissor Queen and Sew N Tune. Think with your good suggestions I can now manage. Funny how I can put quilt after quilt together, but as far as what I call "home sewing" I get lost quickly.

I don't make pillow shams. I cut a top fabric to match my quilt, sometimes add borders of other fabrics used in quilt. Sometimes I putting batting in and put a backing in it and quilt it up and finsh it up. I make two and just throw over the pillows when I make up the bed. I wouldn't take time to stuff the pillows in and the bed looks good, I don't like the looks of the quilt pulled up over the pillows. I also make bed skirts. Just an idea.
