My grandmother would make quilts out of recycled fabrics.
By the time she got around to using these fabrics in quilts, they had been washed many many times.
The "batting" was usually recycled fabric, also.
These things ended up FLAT! They did NOT pucker up when they were washed.
They were intended to be used. She usually tied them.
Admittedly, my Grandma made some "roundish corners" - but she did get a lot made.
In fact, looking at one of Kaffe Fasset's books - my first impression was - that looks like one of Grandma's quilts. (Which I thought was kind of ugly at the time)
So if one is going for "the old fashioned look" - puckered is not a necessity!

My Grandmother also used old cloths to make quilt tops. They were sewn on top of old blankets (batting). The fabric was soft and well woren so it did not pucker when washed. She also tied her quilts. I have one of these. She wasn't worried about style just keeping everyone warm in a house without central heat. It is one of my few treasures I have of hers.

I have many of my Grandmother's quilts that she made out of double knit. I've had to put new bottoms on them but I doubt the tops will ever wear out. When I put the new bottoms on I've found old old quilts inside, sometimes quilted blankets. Just whatever she had.
Somebody always got a quilt for Christmas, others got one for their birthday.
In her later days when she made the double knit she knotted them all.
When she was getting less and less mobile, I used to stretch and pin them to the floor for her, per her instructions. She would then have me start the knotting.
I have to credit her for inspiring me to make handemade gifts for my family
