Okay, so I have finished my first ever block (not counting what I am working on in a class). I want to make this into a quilted wall hanging. My question is... Do I sew through the middle only or is the backing quilted too? I am using a varigated thread so Iam not sure if it will look right on the back if you can see the stitching? Which is why I was thinking I should just go throught the middle (felted batting???) and the block itself. TIA for you help.

You sew through all layers, the top, batting and the backing. I would try to pick a backing that has a print if you don't want the stitching to stand out. But it's the back, so no one will see it unless they purposely look. :)

Congratulations on finishing your first block! What an exciting time as a quilter. I hope you will post a picture once you have it finished.

Molly4503, Good for you!! It feels great, doesn't it? :D

Try using the variegated thread on the top, and match your bobbin thread to the backing and see if that works for you.

Molly,

Congratulations! I remember when I sewed my first block, and I had been a seamstress for years tailoring suits and coats. I wouldn't go back to sewing clothing for anything. That is what thrift stores are for...

My first blocks were blue... My son has the quilt. His wife refuses to let him use it. It is always folded at the bottom of the bed.

Show us, if you can. It will be interesting for us that has sewn quilts for 20+ years. Also, as others have said, put the backing fabric on the back before you quilt and then quilt through all three layers.
