Oh here I go again.....math help please
I want to cut binding, the quilt after quilting and trimming batting and backing measures 54x54 not sure if this is right I measured 54 x4 came 216 inches and added 15 inches for joining strips and ending after sewing binding on the quilt I am cutting 2 1/2 strips for binding is 15 inches enough or should I add more and I have 1/2 yard of fabric I want to use for binding will this be enough? the width is 44,thanks

You have plenty of fabric for 6 stripes which will be plenty. Think each strip is 40 inches times 6 equals 240 inches. Five cuts would be 220 not enough. I dif it at 40 because some fabric slightly smaller cut off edges and joining covered.

If you need exactly 216 inches and your fabric is 44 inches wide divide 216/44. This gives you the total number of 2.5 inch strips you need. So that comes to 4.9 (so 5) strips to meet the exact amount. If you take 5 X 2.5 = 12.5 inches of fabric. So when you add in the extras for joining strips and finishing binding I'd figure 6 strips which is 15 inches of fabric so yes 1/2 a yard would be enough. Anyone want to check me?

I just guess at mine. I save the leftovers for scrappy quilts, which is what I am making now. I also even up the piece of fabric every so often. So, I always try to have enough or better yet more than I will need.

When you are figuring your binding, take the width of fabric (42 you said), from that deduct at least 1 - 1 1/2 inch for cutting off the selvedge on both ends (40.5).
Then deduct 2 1/2" for what you lose when you join the strips diagonally (38). When you join diagonally you lose the width of the binding from each strip once for each strip.
Now six strips will give you 228".
Four sides at 54 gives you 216" needed.
12" is plenty of extra.
