Ok the handicapped reason makes good sense. If I were unable to cut that myself I can see it. And I love scrappy quilts so sometimes even a quarter of a yard is too much for my needs, so I have bought layer cakes to get the variety without standing there for an hour waiting for them to cut 1/4 yards providing they even have all of the prints. Yeah it seems a good amount of change for conveinance but isn't that the way of the world? look at what we pay for water in bottles for conveinance.

"lazy"? and "more money than sense"?Please, dear quilters, mind your manners. Maybe someone else lacks the luxuries of strength, motor control, or free time with which you are blessed. Is quilting only for the strong, healthy, and leisurely?

I understand everybody's point of view on this but with my Patchwork Class I decided to get them to make a Log Cabin quilt using a jelly roll, what a disaster :thumbdown:

We bought the Fabric Freedom ones and the cutting on them was awful, talk about banana shape! I did complain to the company and they sent 4 yards of material as compensation, it is my only time venturing into Jelly rolls and will be my last.

Maia I am sure no one wanted to insult you or anyone else. I agree sometimes we say things that hurt without really realizing that they may sting someone. Please accept my apology if you were upset. It is my experience that quilters as a whole are kind hearted people. After all we do create fabric hugs.

I think many times we type something that we would say to a friend who knows us and don't realize that sometimes it doesn't come across well on the boards where there are thousands of people reading.

I have a friend who just doesn't like to cut, she's healthy, fit, no problems with hand strength, she'd just rather sew then "waste her time cutting." She has the money and not much free time. So for her it's a win-win situation.

Didn't "sting" me. I was just thinking about the quilter who might click on the topic, thinking that a jelly roll of one color would be just the thing to allow her to create quilts with less pain and fatigue or with the scrap of time she has between her jobs and caring for her elderly parents and kids. Instead, she reads "lazy" and "more money than sense". This IS a great board full of kind, generous quilters. I was trying to contribute to the community with a gentle reminder to be thoughtful of others less fortunate (or just different!) than oneself.

If you are consistently getting "dog legs" or bends when you cut strips, this has everything to do with how you are folding your fabric, not your cutting. You need to make sure your fabric hangs straight with no ripples or drapes when you match up selvedges. This often involves offsetting the cut ends, sometimes a lot. This is hard to do with anything much bigger than a yard and a half without a helper or loads of experience.

You can not cut strips straight off the bolt as fabric is rarely straight on the bolt, even though it looks nice and flat, you will get a dog leg every time. You may benefit from only cutting one layer at a time if you always get the bend and can not master refolding at perfect right angles.

I am neither lazy nor rich. My stash has both yardage AND pre-cuts. You may think that I have money to burn, but you are discounting the fact that I MIGHT have used my 40% or 50% off coupon to purchase those pre-cuts. It's MY money and I'll spend it as I please - it's MY time, and I'll spend it as I please. Cutting is half of the work of the quilt, I don't enjoy it, and if I can get to the part of quilting that I DO enjoy (the sewing), than that is my prerogative.

Sometimes I have more money than time....it would be a very boring world if we all thought identically. And sometimes "sense" isn't identical either.

Luckily, I am blessed with an abundance of common sense, however! LOL
