Jelly roll with one fabric? I don't get it!

Wow ladies. The attitudes are flying today. This was supposed to be a simple conversation about discovering the reasoning behind something I did not understand. I now understand why some people might choose to buy these rather then cut them. No need to get huffy or insulted. Please stop taking things personally. Everyone is entitled to use their time and money and opinions as they see fit. Things on the board have certainly changed in the last year.

And I still don't get why someone would sell a jelly roll of all one print, unless it was a mistake. I agree that jelly rolls provide variety without having to buy small amounts of lots of fabrics.

I have a jelly roll I haven't even used yet, it was a gift. I just made a rail fence quilt and cut all the quilts at one time or another and decided they needed to be used. I have enough variety to cut my own. We all use our money and sense however we want to, nothing wrong with that.

Moda and some others sell one solid color in a jelly roll.

I would not purchase a jelly roll with only one color, but that is just me. I like jelly rolls for a variety of fabric, not because I want them precut.

If you are consistently getting "dog legs" or bends when you cut strips, this has everything to do with how you are folding your fabric, not your cutting. You need to make sure your fabric hangs straight with no ripples or drapes when you match up selvedges. This often involves offsetting the cut ends, sometimes a lot. This is hard to do with anything much bigger than a yard and a half without a helper or loads of experience.

You can not cut strips straight off the bolt as fabric is rarely straight on the bolt, even though it looks nice and flat, you will get a dog leg every time. You may benefit from only cutting one layer at a time if you always get the bend and can not master refolding at perfect right angles.

And I would just add that once the fabric is folded correctly, you must make sure your ruler is lined up correctly. A horizontal line on the ruler must line up perfectly with the fabric fold or you will be cutting on a slight diagonal.

I used to have the same problem until I figured it out.

The last thing I meant to do was insult anyone by saying "lazy" I'm sorry if that is how it was taken. I like jelly rolls for their varity for fabric. I have not problem cutting my own out of my stash. I understand the need for them.

I've never bought one with all the same fabric and unless one was heavily discounted I probably wouldn't as I have an Accuquilt Studio to do my strips. But, I would agree they're they're perfect to use as sashing or binding.

I don't like the pinked edge on them. I have only bought one jelly roll. I bought it because I liked the look of the fabric, but was dissapointed when i unrolled it, it did not impress me as much. I then had to shop around on the internet to find one of the matching fabrics for the borders.Saying that, I have a friend who loves them.
