Sitting here looking at ways to organize my fabric. Cool ideas on line but not gonna buy any furniture. Notice that some quilters may be separating their NEW jelly rolls by color. Have to admit I do have a container of jelly's banded together by color but newbees are all wrapped up as they arrived in the mail. No, wait, quilt fairy brought them.

So ? is: do you open your new jelly rolls and sort them by color and have HUGE jellies with shades of one color or leave them alone so you can use it for a project?

I think the point of a Jr is to have a group of Fabrics that all coordinate but diff colors. To separate by color eliminates that. Now. Scraps or unused Jr strips CAN get sorted by color but newbie keep together

I am another one who votes for leaving the JR intact. You can always take out a colour at a later stage if you need. I have rolls of colour but they are my own precuts.

I would not separate the rolls by color just for the sake of storage. One of the values of a jelly roll, or other pre-cuts, is that the fabrics are all from the same line and coordinate together. I do separate by color if I have just a few strips left over or pieces of strips.

It is hard enough to separate them to use for a project, them being so pretty, perfect, and tied with a little bow. They are like eye candy. Sit them on a shelf somewhere so you can admire them until you use them. Prettier than any ole vase or knickknack but don't separate them.

When I finish a quilt I often cut my fabric into Strips and create my own jelly rolls which I use for donation quilts. I sort these in colors but I don’t open and take apart a new jelly roll.

They are easier to pet in a nice cute roll. I really think it matters if you purchased the jelly roll for a project or stash. I love my little stack of jelly rolls all ready for a quick project.

I agree with Rff that JR are put together with compatible fabrics. It is probably easy to grab a JR and start a project. On the other hand-if you want a couple of certain fabrics out of the JR then go for it. It probably is personal preference.

I have shelves just for precuts and fat quarters. I love looking at them! I get inspired that way. I don't separate any of them. My ideas come from the fact that they are coordinates.
Fat quarters are my favs. Jellyrolls are my least fav.

yep...I am in the "keep them all together" club with the precuts....however, there always seem to be a few questionable fabrics mixed in there...you know, the ones with the huge prints, or the strange colors.....so I do sort out those strips or squares if I don't use them and put them with like minded ones....so currently I have shoe boxes of "warm colors" (red, orange, purple, etc), cool colors (blues, greens), neutrals (cream, white, tan), blacks (including greys) and a "oh my goodness" (large prints and multicolor) When my boxes overflow, I will break them down into more narrowly defined color families. I did just watch some u-tubes from GE designs with Gudrun Erla (Stripology rulers and books) and she shows how she cuts up fabric to make her own jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc using a stripology ruler. It is also a good way to deal with scraps. I also try and cut up my left over fabric less than 1/4 of a yard and it makes it easy to just grab the strips and go. The ruler is expansive....but if you are planning on quilting for a while...worth it I think. Reason I went out searching for this ruler is that I had an ancient June Taylor short cut but the slits had become a bit ragged over the years and my cutter kept getting caught. I do have a Go cutter I use....but the ruler make many more sizes available and I think it is easer to subcut strip sets with the ruler.
