do Joann's batiks need to be washed before using in quilts?
Thank you.

Individual choice. Batiks are a little chancy, since they come from overseas and we can't be sure all the extra dye has been washed out.

I'd try the "bleed" test: Snip a small piece off, place it in a clear glass with some water and drop of detergent; shake and let it sit overnight. If the water colors, it should be washed and maybe washed again. There are other tests but this is the one I use. Some folks just rub the fabric with a wet cotton bud.

As a good rule .. test all batiks regardless of where you purchased. Its just too risky not to test.

As a normal thing I don't always pre wash my fabric; depends on the fabric and colors that I put together but I do ALWAYS was my batiks. If there is any bleeding or shrinkage I want it to happen before I make what ever it will be; quilt or garment. It doesn't matter if I buy it at my favorite LQS or at Joann's; I pre wash it.
