Oh, I do this all the time! That's what makes quilting so much fun.

Sometimes I make a quilt just because I liked the pattern or the fabric. Nothing wrong with doing a "just because" quilt.

I think all of my quilts are "just because", then when I'm finished with the top and ready to quilt it, it becomes, who's this for?

I just quilt to quilt. I love fabric and like to purchase what I like- so I have to do something with it! So I make quilts for family, friends and charitable causes. My guild will furnish fabric to anyone who will make it up. I usually use my own fabric and use the batting they provide-it is not really awe inspiring to buy batting. I just love to sew.

I make what I like and then decide who I will give it to (or not). Quilting is my fun time and I don’t want to spend time doing something I don’t enjoy or working with fabric that doesn’t inspire.

I quilt cause I like to. Once in awhile I have a recipient in mind but mostly they go into my quilt cupboard and I gift them when I am moved to do so. This year, for instance, my brother had triple bypass - he got a lap quilt. Our church had a bazaar where I donated two to be auctioned off, they both brought a good amount to be used for mission work, and one more to my son who has been going thru some tough times. Another will go to our oldest Grandson at Christmas, it has ducks on and he is a hunter. They all will be in the hands of people that I am pretty sure will appreciate them. A good feeling.

I do both - I make a quilt for each pregnant coworker. At this point I suspect they're getting pregnant just to get a quilt. Other quilts I make because I've just seen a Jenny Doan video and must try it. Currently working on her version of a hunters star in purple/turquoise/lime florals and really enjoying it.

Probably 80% of my quilts are made just because I want to try the pattern. I more often than not do not have a specific person in mind when I make the quilt. It is my joy to give quilts to those who NEED a quilt for warmth or comfort. Put those layer cakes to use! Smile when you have them finished and wait to see how terrific it feels to have a gift all ready before it is needed.

Yes I do this all the time. It's fun to work on something that makes you happy. And it's nice to have tops on hand in case you need a gift for someone.
