Its okay to make something for yourself. Especially when its made from fabrics you really love.

So far, with the exception of charity quilts, I've always had someone in particular to give a quilt to. Might be for a friend going through chemo, a sister's 50th birthday, a going-away gift, or a special baby.

Everyone I know has one or two quilts. What I don't keep I donate to kids in foster care in my county. I donate a bunch in November for their Christmas party. I have a whole year to make as many as I can. Just finished a bunch for this year from lots an lots of scraps. I made them fast as I could to get the scraps out of here. Now I will work slower.

I have a very large, ever expanding family and I came late to quilting, so all of mine have been gifts - oh, except for prayer quilts for the church and a couple for fund raisers. I haven't had the luxury of a quilt w/o a home, though I have started an Irish Chain for me.

About 75% of my quilts are made just because I like the fabric or pattern and just have to make it. The other 25% are gifts, but I just ask what they like, maybe what size bed if I want to make a big quilt. Gift quilts are simple quilts for me. I’m the only Quilter in the family and my experience is non Quilter’s care more about the fabric print than anything else. Complex quilts are just because I like them.

Dunster, I am with you. Quilting is something I have always wanted to do. Most of my projects are because I want to do them or because I want to try a new technique. While my stash has grown, my sewing room has gotten smaller and there is very little room for the actual completing of projects. Fortunately, I have access to two UFO days per week or I would never accomplish anything. I do a lot of smaller projects, which I can complete.

Even for baby quilts, I'm usually: Great, a baby is coming, I have this really cute fabric and this pattern I wanted to try out... Was just waiting for an opportunity!

Now that I have a quilt on every bed and a wallhanging, I guess I could start thinking about recipients for all the quilts on my bucket list I'm planning on making...
