What if you lightly dust the black pieces with something pale that will wash out? Do you have one of those stencil pounces? I think if you pounced the edges you're working with, that might help make them more visible.

One reason I like working with starched fabric is that I can feel the edges when I piece. When eye sight is not enough maybe adding some starch will help you feel your way through.

My machine has a plexie glass extension table around it. I slip a small led light under it. Back lighting helps me.

I'm not sure where the problem is exactly. Can you slip a piece of white tissue paper behind the bottom black piece? Would this help you see the edge? Or maybe if it is the top piece, run a piece of chalk along the cut line to help you see the edge to line it up with the lower piece. I love working with black and know the impact it can have on a quilt. Just look at your cats - they are outstanding! I especially like the twisted tails. Please, take a break and only do a few at a time. There is nothing worse than turning the joyful experience of making a quilt into a dreaded chore.

I have trouble sewing black fabric too. I usually sew in daylight and also have the extra LED light kit strip attached to my machine. That actually helps a lot.
