A long time ago, I noticed that some of the Kona Cottons definitely had "dye lot variations" for some of the colors.

(Color A might vary from lot to lot)

Is this still the case?

or

Can I expect Color A to match Color A from various dye lots now?

No...you can not...they do have dye lot changes..AND the Kona is different at Hancocks, Joanns, and quilt shops...be sure you know what you are buying..take a sample of what you have with you and get in direct light to compare it...

I still get dye lot variations and always expect them with any line of solids. Kona is no exception, sorry. Color also varies (or at least appears to) by direction of grain, so watch that if you are trying to match two different lots.

I think it is impossible for them to control all of the variables to make each lot identical.
Same with yarns and thread too :D:D:D

So it is a good idea to buy as much as one thinks one will need of a given color off one bolt?

It may even look the same before washing but there might be a difference after wash.

If you're buying for a single project, yes.

What a good suggestion! I recently bought 3 yds of different blues for the sake of one small piece of binding because I didn't take a sample with me. But I like Kona so much that I know I'll use them elsewhere.
