How does it work, what are the rules? How many blocks do you make, etc??

It all depends on what people are wanting that determine the rules.

The black and white swap that is going on now "rules":

The blocks must be 12 1/2" unfinished size.
Only black and white, no other colors.
Can be any fabric pattern in 100% cotton, pre-washed.
Can be any block pattern you want but it was decided not applique.
You make 12 blocks all the same.
Send them in and you get 1 of your blocks back and 11 other blocks, all different, to put together into a sampler quilt of your own.

You can still join the black and white swap. The blocks need to be sent in by June 1st.

Other swaps might have other rules. There was one recently where the blocks had to be blue and white stars.

Some people are very particular. I am going to start doing one soon, but I haven't. I have heard however that people are very fussy.
Not all. But a lot of them.

What do you mean by fussy? That the sent in blocks have to be perfectly done?

I hope the black and white one isn't fussy. It's my first one and I am being more careful. It's not like doing it for myself where if my seams aren't perfect then, oh well. Not that this has been imposed by the group, it's my own wish to not send in wonky blocks.

Quiltingbee I understand what you are saying. I don't think the quilters are trying to be fussy and placing perfection as a stipulation on other quilters ~ we are all in varying stages of quilting and that is understood by the members here. Just as I would not take a burnt casserole to a pot luck dinner I don't want to give my second best to a swap. I've found the quilters here to be understanding and helpful. I am sure that any swap you participate in your blocks will be welcomed. We are here to have fun and to help and receive help. Come on and jump into a swap, you will have fun. :)

I would prefer getting a simple block done well (ending up at the expected size being a prime concern) than a complex block done poorly.

I understand that we are all at different stages of our quilting lives - some of us are learning more and getting better, some of us - for whatever reason - are unable to do as well as we once did.

But I still would like the blocks to be close to the expected size.

There is always something to be learned from other people's work.

I am with Pam. This is my first swap of any kind. I wouldn't want to send a block done poorly. Now this doesn't mean that they are all done perfectly. But they are all done with great care. Out of the 12, there is one block that for some reason came out a tad bit smaller than the rest. Why? I have no idea! But that is the block I have chosen to keep for myself.

I am so excited about taking part in a swap and hopefully many more to come.

I thought it was July 1st??
