Depends on how large and how much you want to spend. I saw them on line from $38.50 to $129.
Google Light Tracer, they come in several sizes and the most reasonable pricing.
LED's are a little more expensive.

Did something similar to tesspug - although never thought of christmas lights. I use a simple bulb in a socket that we had in the garage. I don't think this is rocket science. Plexiglass at Lowe's or Home Depot is easy, and then some 2 by 4 scraps to support it. Thing is, this is easier to store than a big light box. Do love the Christmas light idea.

I use an acrylic box picture frame (ref to attached link) and a light from my Christmas village. The set-up is: (1) start with a cookie sheet with a towel UNDER it (protects table from bulb heat); (2) single light from village lays on cookie sheet; and (3) with picture frame set over it.

I don't know if it's just my area, but I've been seeing LOTS of working light tables at thrift stores!! I have a glass-top art desk with a lamp underneath that I usually use, but I found a really nice 12x18 light box for $3 at a thrift store outlet and couldn't pass it up. Usually I see them priced around $10-15, depending on the size.

I made my own: used a piece of clear plastic <about 12" square>. Placed it on top of my dining room table, and opened it up <the plastic goes in place of the table leaf>.....put a light under the table....and voila!! Works great.
